Renewed U.S. interest has given a boost to Greenland's independence movement and strengthened its position in future secession talks with Denmark, according to the country's leading pro-independence party.

The process of Greenland gaining independence from Denmark needs to be accelerated, particularly regarding the organization of a referendum, said Erik Jensen, the leader of the ruling Siumut party, in an interview with DR.

Greenland's ruling Siumut party plans to hold a vote on independence following a general election next month, it said on Thursday, an issue made urgent by U.S. President Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring the island.
