Airbnb is suing the City of New Orleans for requiring the company and other short-term rental platforms ensure properties they market are in compliance with city regulations.

The New Orleans City Council has passed a motion that removes any exceptions to the rules regarding short-term rentals.

But some City Council members and neighborhood advocates worry the change will lead to lay offs at larger hotels, leave few protections for guests and — notably — short-cut the city’s temporary ban on commercial short-term rentals.

Plaintiffs say the regulations infringe on property owners’ rights and illegally force booking platforms to enforce the city’s regulations.

The plaintiffs argue that the city's vague restrictions infringe on their rights to lease their properties and realize their full value.

There are several short-term rental ordinances city staff are putting before the public and city council Thursday. The city defines a STR as somewhere that is rented out “for periods of less than 30 consecutive days.

The city was scheduled to vote Thursday on rules that staff said would make it harder for short-term rental owners to skirt the city’s licensing requirements.
