Grand Rapids priest defrocked over mimicking Elon Musk Nazi-like salute
Calvin Robinson, priest-in-charge at St. Paul’s Anglican Catholic Church, was defrocked Thursday, Jan. 29, after church leadership learned he’d made the controversial salute to a crowd at the National Pro-Life Summit on Jan. 25 in Washington, D.C.
The now-former priest, who’s also a popular far-right British commentator, told the crowd, “The people who understand, cheer… The people who do not, reach for their pitchforks.” Erm!
Musk made a virtual appearance at a campaign event for Germany’s far-right AfD party, saying “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents.”
"Children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great grandparents," Musk said, apparently referring to Germany's Nazi past.
The Anglican Catholic Church said Calvin Robinson was previously warned against ‘online trolling.’ Robinson called the gesture an ‘attempt at dry wit.’
Musk, 53, spoke to a crowd of Trump supporters at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., after Trump was sworn in at the U.S. Capitol. While thanking the supporters, Musk put his right hand over his heart, then extended his arm out with his palm down. He then turned around and repeated the gesture.
Elon Musk referenced Adolf Hitler and other Nazi leaders in a social media post filled with puns early Thursday.
"Those who mimic the Nazi salute, even as a joke or an attempt to troll their opponents, trivialize the horror of the Holocaust," said the Anglican Catholic Church.
A Grand Rapids priest was removed from his position in the Anglican Catholic Church on Wednesday after mimicking a gesture recently made by Elon Musk, which has been compared to a Nazi salute.
