The Vatican says Pope Francis suffered a bronchial spasm that resulted in him breathing in vomit, requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation.
ROME (AP) — Pope Francis suffered an isolated coughing fit on Friday that resulted in him inhaling vomit and requiring non-invasive mechanical ventilation, the Vatican said in relaying an alarming setback in his two-week long battle against double pneumonia.
The Vatican has set in motion nightly prayers for Pope Francis in the hope that he might recover and get back to leading the Catholic Church.
The 88-year-old pontiff showed “further slight improvement” in his condition as he continues to receive treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
