The cross-border abortion wars escalated Friday, when a Louisiana grand jury indicted Margaret Carpenter, a physician from New York, for violating the state’s criminal abortion laws. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a bill to shield the identities of doctors who prescribe abortion medications, days after a physician in the state was charged with prescribing abortion pills to a pregnant minor in Louisiana.

The case opens a new front in the battle between states that ban abortion and states that support providing abortion anywhere in the country.
