The House of Representatives struck down a stopgap bill backed by Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, with over a dozen Republicans defying the chamber's leadership and voting against the measure.

This time, five senators were listed as “not voting” by the Senate website: Democrat Cory Booker (New Jersey), independent Joe Manchin (West Virginia), Republican Mike Rounds (South Dakota), Republican Thom Tillis (North Carolina), and Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance (Ohio).

Wednesday night’s vote also showed that former President Trump is intent on forcing a government shutdown, as are other Republicans unwilling to work with Speaker Johnson.

House Republicans are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown, which they've tied to a Donald Trump-backed bill on noncitizen voting.

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) government funding bill was sunk through the combined efforts of Democrats and Republicans in the lower chamber on Wednesday. Fourteen members of Johnson’s own party voted alongside most Democrats against the Louisiana Republican’s spending plan,

Johnson previously scrapped a vote on the bill last week to spend the weekend rounding up support from hesitant members of his caucus. He also attached the SAVE Act to the legislation, which would prohibit states from registering non-citizens as voters—something Johnson himself has admitted is already illegal under federal law.
