Federal officials could withhold funding from schools that allow transgender women and girls to play women's sports.

On Thursday, the VHSL said it would keep its then-current language — which allowed approved student-athletes to compete on teams that match their gender identity — as it was in compliance with Virginia law, despite the executive order from President Trump prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in women's and girls' sports.

The Charlottesville-based governing body said its staff will draft changes and update handbooks and policy manuals 'in the coming days'
