Crowds had come to Whitehall from far and wide to honor the war dead on Remembrance Sunday today. We were pretty squished in, lining the streets on either side of the Cenotaph. But when Big Ben struck the hour at 11 a.m. for the two minutes of silence you could, as the saying goes, have heard a pin drop.
